Britain's Moment in the Middle East 1914-1971
Published in Hardcover by Vintage/Ebury (A Division of Random House Group) (09 April, 1981)
Average review score:

Undoubtedly the best book yet writen on the modern mid-eastThis is by far the greatest book i have ever read in my life as an overview of the modern middle east- it was truly excellent. Elizabeth Monroe captures the heart of all the people that were big, rather dirty, smelly animals and gives them a bath, metaphorically speaking. It was a true work of genius, studying idiots of the political world of the past like Mr. Sinsiuyb;iwub;ofv.

Dr. Nina and the Panther
Published in Hardcover by Dodd Mead (September, 1976)

Backwoods girl fights prejudice of the times, becomes doctorAmazing story of a woman who was raised in tent, home schooled until 13, went to grade school where she was put into the senior class, entered college graduating at 16, was not allowed to enter medical school unless she married. She married a cold fish but had three children by him because she wanted children. She sold religious tracts to "buy her way into medical school". She was subjected to immense prejudice from the teachers and the students in medical school, but was one of two out of nine female students to graduate. When she began her practice, the school sent her entire salary to her husband who promptly used it to further his own ends. She became a legend in her area of practice and eventually became renowned in a large region of the USA for her diagnostic abilities and her humanitarian practice of medicine. She eventually divorced her husband and married a man who appreciated and dearly loved her. At her death one of her young patients had achieved fame and a high post in the United Nations and flew from Rome to attend her funeral. A great read, will hold you in its grip from cover to cover.

Earth Science (and In-TERRA-Active 2.0 CD-ROM, Non-InfoTrac Version)
Published in Paperback by Brooks Cole (25 August, 1997)
Average review score:

A very comprehensive overview of Earth's SystemsThe authors treat each of Earth's Systems in a very straightforward manner, using clear and illustrative graphics. They also do a fine job of tying together Earth's systems and processes into an interrelated package, as opposed to simply a series of disconnected chapters. I use this text in my Washington Online course. Al Friedman, Everett Community College

German Hero-Sagas and Folk-Tales (Oxford Myths and Legends)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (April, 1994)
Average review score:

The rascal is king!An excellent little book and quick read. The book is broken into two parts. The first part, Hero-Sagas, is, except for the first story, an abridgement of the Nibelungenlied. It tells the story of Siegfried and Kriemhild and their terrible ending. The second part, Folk-Tales, is filled with short stories where the main message seems to be that the cunning and quick witted will always win, especially against the proud. Not exactly the best morality message, but it is fun to see wits in action.

Greek Cooking for Everyone
Published in Paperback by Wide World Pub Tetra (March, 1989)
Average review score:

A Wonderful Source of Traditional Greek RecipesAs the Greek Food Host at Bella Online, I refer to many Greek cookbooks. Greek Cooking For Everyone is one of my favorites. The recipes are very traditional, yet the ingredients are readily available to American cooks. The first few pages of the cookbook offer background information on the staples of Greek cuisine, and tips on stocking a Greek kitchen, which is very helpful and informative. This cookbook is divided into menus rather than types of food (i.e. 'meat menus', 'fish menus', etc.), so that each section provides a meal complete with appetizers and side dishes. Most recipes are for four or more people, so if you are looking for recipes for two, you will have to adjust the measurements. Although this is not the type of cookbook that includes professional, color photographs of Greece, it is a very handy reference and a great source of traditional Greek recipes.
